Support for substance use and compulsive behaviors, without judgment
Whether it's alcohol, substances, or a behavior that's become hard to control, addiction usually isn't the whole story — it's often a response to something underneath.
Therapy for addiction isn't about willpower or being told what to do. It's about understanding what the substance or behavior is doing for you — what it's soothing, numbing, or making bearable — and building other ways to get those needs met.
This practice supports Virginia residents working on substance use and compulsive behaviors through telehealth. For medical detox, withdrawal management, or medication-assisted treatment, therapy is coordinated alongside a physician or a specialized program rather than in place of one.
What this can look like
- Using more, or more often, than you intend to
- Relying on a substance or behavior to manage stress, sleep, or emotion
- Noticing relationships or responsibilities affected, even a little
- Wanting to cut back and finding it harder than expected
- Shame or secrecy around use
- A cycle of stopping and starting that feels discouraging
How therapy can help
- CBT identifies the triggers and thought patterns that drive use, and builds concrete alternative responses.
- ACT works with cravings and urges without requiring you to "win" against them first.
- IFS and somatic therapy address what the substance or behavior has been protecting you from.
Every plan is built around you — modalities are chosen and adjusted together as therapy progresses, not applied as a fixed formula.
